Celpe-Bras is the only Brazilian Portuguese language proficiency certification officially recognized. It is done by 18 universities in Brazil and 28 countries. The test, developed by the Ministry of Education, is unique for all the candidates enrolled and it is applied at the same date in all locations. The candidate is assessed by the ability of language use and not necessarily the knowledge of grammar. There are four certification levels: intermediate, upper intermediate, advanced and upper advanced. The test is divided into two modules: the first, which consists of listening comprehension and text production; and second part, which is oral, and two Portuguese teachers talk to the candidates about their activities and interests. Celpe-Bras has a committee formed by specialist teachers in the area of Portuguese for foreigners, who make the tests and does the training of teachers in universities in Brazil and abroad.
